Exercise

Movement helps fatigue, mood, and recovery for many people. The safe amount depends on the treatment, the surgery, and other illnesses.

Ask the treating team before starting a new programme, especially after chest or abdominal surgery, or if there is bone involvement, low blood counts, or a risk of bleeding.

Walking is the most useful starting point for many people. Short sessions most days beat a rare intense effort.

Stop and seek care for chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new leg swelling, or a fall.

After some breast or lymph-node surgery, a physiotherapist should guide arm movement so the shoulder does not stiffen and lymphoedema risk is respected.

Survivors who are able to do so are generally encouraged to build toward regular aerobic activity and simple strength work. That target is a direction, not a rule for someone still in hospital.
